The historian Claretta defines Cisterna as “a charming little village, located astride those hillocks that produce wines that do not give rise to several others and is known by gourmets for the flavor of its truffles”... The castle dominates over all the hills and surrounding area and boasts an impressive system of enceintes, which is accessed via an arc with “the vestiges of the Savoy crest”, the last owners. In its oldest parts, it dates back to the twelfth century.
A medieval square tower dominates the square: it is the seventeenth-century work commissioned by the Dal Pozzo della Cisterna princes. Since 1980, the castle has been an important ethnographic museum. In this varied landscape, the field from the bottom of the valley blends in with the vineyard that climbs the high and steep hill to join the forest on the slopes to the north, not exploited for the cultivation of crops. Exposure to the sun and the nature of the terrain are part of a wise and respectful dialog between humans and the environment.
